Steve Prazenka was Hackworth's first military mentor. Prazenka taught Hackworth how to be a soldier and to effectively fight the enemy. Prazenka's dedication to instilling discipline in the troops was pivotal in Hackworth's leadership style.

Colonel Glover Johns was Hackworth's mentor on leadership. Johns taught Hackworth how to expertly lead soldiers. Johns created the Basic Philosophy of Soldiering (shown below) that outlines how to be a successful leader. Hackworth used this as a guide throughout his military life.
