In 1971, Hackworth appeared on ABC's Issues and Answers to speak out against the poor leadership he was seeing in the Vietnam War.
This broadcast cost him his career but exposed the Army and created controversy
over the Vietnam War.

The controversial interview caused the Army to scramble to silence and court-martial him. Hackworth was able to evade punishment and retire from the military in Australia.
